The Missing Mediator –
Science Debates in a Knowledge Society

Hanns-J. Neubert was organiser and speaker at ESOF on 7 July 2010 in Turin, Italy. He reported about the German Science Debate (Wissenschaftsdebatte), initiated by TELI, and proposed to have science debates all over Europe, which could be facilitated by the European Union of Science Journalists' Associations EUSJA through its member organisations in 24 countries.

Science Debate goes Europe

US-Science Debate 2008 goes international
European countries that have organized or are organizing science debates since the American Science Debate 2008 include Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Sweden, as well as an overall EU initiative.

Neubert is co-organiser of the German Science Debate (Wissenschaftsdebatte) of TELI and proposes to set out science debates all over Europe. He invited Shawn Otto, co-founder of the US science debate, to participate in the EUSJA/TELI session "The Missing Mediator" at ESOF 2010 in Turin.

Germany: Turn or Equal?

Facilitator and editor of a blog of "The Broker", discussing the new turn in Germany's developing and poverty reduction politics after the latest elections in September 2009. Although only midfield with its Official Development Assistance share of 0.38% of GDP, Germany is second as donor country in absolute terms. How such a monetary power may shape Europe's development policies and its picture in the recipient countries is subject to this debate.

Roadmapping Science in Society

“Roadmapping Science in Society” is a Strategic Acitivity of the European Science Foundation ESF, which sees a remarkable need not only for communicating science, but also for a real dialogue and debate: “The relationship between science and society should be thought over in a systematic way because more and more worrying signs show that the key societal publics have been losing interest in science and, in turn, science does not get enough inspiration from society.” The initiative has been prepared by the CNRS (Presidency/General directorate) and the ESF (Standing Committee for Science and Society). A strategic workshop “Impact, Evaluation and Accountability” was held in Paris on 30 June - 1 July 2009 to discuss the these issues and suggest how they could be addressed.

Two Speeches on Science and Democracy

Towards Knowledge Democracy was a conference in August 2009 in Leiden/The Netherlands, organised by the Dutch Advisory Council for Research on Spatial planning, Nature and the Environment RMNO. The goal was to share visions and experiences on how to deal with the challenges and possibilities that occur on the interface between science, politics, society and the media.

Hanns-J. Neubert was invited to present his opinions on the interpretation of policy-relevant knowledge by the media and to introduce the idea of public science debates, like the German Wissenschaftsdebatte 2009, in order to explain in which ways the media could be responsible for the knowledge and information on which citizens and politicians base their opinions and a politician eventually will react.

Mentorenprogramm für afrikanische Wissenschaftsjournalisten

Das Mentorenprogramm für Wissenschaftsjournalisten aus Afrika und dem Nahen Osten, ein Programm des Weltverbandes der Wissenschaftsjournalisten WFSJ, lief am 31. März 2009 aus. Obwohl Neubert im Laufe der zwei wundervollen und bereichernden Jahre drei seiner Mentees aus unterschiedlichen Gründen verlor, war das Gesamtprogramm außerordentlich erfolgreich. Und besonders erfolgreich war Neuberts Mentee Augustine Alexander Abutu.

Mentoring Programme for African Science Journalists

The mentoring programme for science journalists from Africa and the Near East, a programme of the World Federation of Science Journalists WFSJ, ended on 31 May 2009. Although Neubert lost during the two wonderful and enlightning years three of his mentees for various reasons the total programme was an overwhelming success. Especially successful was Neubert's mentee Augustine Alexander Abutu.

Ethics in Science Journalism

Historically, science journalists consider themselves more scientists than journalists. What are the roots and the traditions of science writers in Europe, how did this craft develop in the capitalist and communist worlds, who are the role models in the globalised world to ensure the flow of communication between scientists and the public and vice versa? Are science journalists vulnerable to intellectual and moral corruption? Do science writers need a special code of ethics like medical practitioners?

Mentorenprogramm für afrikanische Wissenschaftsjournalisten

Das Mentorenprogramms für Wissenschaftsjournalisten aus Afrika und dem Nahen Osten ist ein Programm des Weltverbandes der Wissenschaftsjournalisten WFSJ.

Das Programm will die Qualität und Quantität der Wissenschaftsberichterstattung in den Entwicklungsländern steigern und die Aufmerksamkeit in den Newsrooms darauf lenken, dass Wissenschaft ein wichtiger Teil der Nachrichtenmischung ist.

Mentoren und Mentees trafen sich erstmals während der Weltkonferenz zum Klimawechsel (COP) bei der UNEP in Nairobi/Kenia vom 4. bis 10. November 2006.

In September 2002 we organized a study tour for a group of European science journalists to show them the potentials and advances of the biotechnological research and industries in the northern Germany and Sweden (MediCon Valley).

Locations: Germany (Kiel + Dengelsberg, Lübeck, Wismar, Rostock, Greifswald), Öresund-region: Sweden (Lund, Malmö), Danmark (Kopenhagen).

The journalists came from Finland, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Russia, and have mainly been members of the national associations of EUSJA. Sponsors: Governments of the visited countries, host companies, TELI (responsible), SFV.
